The ACLU member in me just says no.

Is comment editing a common practice out there? How many of you blog owners do it?

I don't. I've deleted comments on very rare occasion, but I don't edit. Editing changes tone and tenor, and I don't want to have anything on my blog to be different than what the author of a comment intended. I just had a situation where a blog owner allowed some disturbed (read: fucked up) person to accuse me of all kinds of truly nasty shit... entirely due to my post about lust... but when I responded that the commenter was "fucked up" for saying that "all men should be killed," (as well as all the personal attacks), the blog author wrote me a reprimand and edited the comment to her liking.

Yuck! Now it seems like I tacitly approved of the person who was being so icky.

The thing is, ALL of the comments should be on there, right? If you're gonna allow comments, either moderate them, post them, or delete them, but editing them for content just sucks. And I don't care what people say about me, if I have the opportunity to counter.

Anyway: enough about this.

I get so excited by finding interesting and/or opinionated people... but not everyone can be a Zube Girl, a Tiny Coconut, or even, God help us, a Digital Objective. Sometimes it just doesn't work out. Editing + email reprimands = not my cup o' tea.

Love to all. Even you, A C.

Editing comments? That just doesn't make sense. Maybe I just don't get enough comments to have this be an issue, but the only time I've done anything to a comment, it was to delete it...and that was because it was a spam/phishing comment.

And...Aw! You like me! You really like me! (The feeling is mutual.)

I don't think Blogger provides the option to edit comments. You have to use third party software.

Personally, I HATE censureship. Maybe due to my roots. But if a comment really bothers/aggravates me I will not allow trolling, so I will just delete it.

It doesn't. You can use Haloscan. But I don't want to edit anyway, you know?

That's crap. Honestly, I found your post about lust HONEST which is damn refreshing.

And the fact that she would equate your honesty with being a reason why men can't help themselves is nothing short of disgusting.

Grr. I've got more to say about that, but I'll shut my yap, because sometimes, I think, that's the right thing to do.

I've done it twice and both times the person knew I was editing her comment and had given me her approval. Matter of fact, once she asked me to do it.

One time this person had posted an entire article from a new site. I removed all but the first paragraph and posted a link to the rest. I let the person who left the comment know what I had done and told her I would put it all back if she wanted (it was a very long article). She was fine with it and asked me how to leave a link inside a comment. She hadn't known how to do that which is why she left the entire post.

The second time she asked me to correct a link she had left in the comment.

Those are the only two times I've ever edited anyones comments.

I don't edit comments even when the person disagrees with me. Competing points of view make for a more interesting blog.

Editing folks with permission is, course, entirely reasonable. Apologies if I implied otherwise.

Rock on.

I don't edit comments, and will delete 'em only if spam... otherwise I tend to feel it's up to the commenter to hang themselves as they see fit.

I've editied for profanity - just substituted another word, or put [bleep] in brackets.

Also, I don't let anybody call anybody else a Nazi on my site. That is too serious, and it gets thrown around like it's trivial.

But I always SAY I did so, and offer to let the person take it down if they wish.

I had no idea you could edit comments(but I don't use Haloscan)...kinda wish I could now, I'd change every comment to be someone telling me how much I rock. :)

I didn't think your post about lust was anything but honest and a bit funny...If feeling excessively "amorous" is a sign you have no self control then I guess we're all going to hell, huh?

By the way...just thought I'd mention that when I said it's a way for men to use the excuse that they can't help themselves, I meant some men use it as an excuse for cheating. I never mentioned or referred to or meant date rape. That you took it that way say a lot about you.

Editing comments is just plain wrong, unless, of course, the commentor asks for it to be done. It defeats the entire purpose of posting to a blog and allowing people to leave comments! Unless your purpose is to run a propaganda game, that is. Any editing of a comment, even for profanity, should be accompanied by "Edited by the blog owner for..."

Sigh.

You're disturbed that I posted about something? Huh? I don't even know how to comment on that weirdness.

What's fascinating, here, is that "AC" edited my comment because she didn't like that I called someone "fucked" up."

And then she comes here and starts lobbing insults left and right.

Hypocritical and sad. At best.
