Katrina: UPS, Wal-Mart, McDonald's.

I haven't mentioned Katrina yet, because I believe everyone knows what a complete national fuck-up the whole thing has been, and what a disgrace it is to our government that the response was so poor. And if you disagree with me, nothing I say here will convince you.

However:

Utah's Salt Lake Tribune is reporting that UPS, McDonald's and Wal-Mart have stopped paying employees who were nailed by Katrina. I don't eat at McDonald's, I rarely shop at Wal-Mart, but I do use UPS. No longer.

I run a small business. And the goal of my business, like every business, is to make money. But when my employees encounter unavoidable personal situations (or even avoidable one's, depending on the situation), I pay them. Because paying them when they are down means they will work really hard when they are up. Kindness breeds results.

So dammit, people, even if you're a through-and-through asshole, being nice is SMART.

Love to all. Even you, the guy in the Permanent Bad Mood.

I hadn't heard this. Thanks for pointing it out. I will stop using UPS as well. The other two I don't use anyway.

I definitely agree on the being nice strategy towards your employees. And while people with small businesses like you may have to struggle to keep up payment, I don´t see where McD, UPS or Wal-Mart have troubles. It´s simply sad.

I already don't do Wal-Mart of McDonalds. I am down in Texas this weekend and shopped at Costco for donating to relief centers. I also dined at Houston's and our waiter was from New Orleans. Houston's brought him up and let him work in Dallas and arranged for him to stay with other servers. THIS IS A WAITER. And Houston's cared enough to make it happen. It's not impossible. I hate Wal-Mart and McDonald's with a passion. Now I hate them more.

I can't believe these companies could be so cold. Well nevermind I guess I can. Thanks for pointing this out, I will never shop at Walmart again.

Sometimes I feel like the guy in the Permanent Bad Mood. Thanks for loving me!

As far as Wal-Mart goes, I will continue to shop there till the day I die. I fuckin' love it. So, I invite other in-the-closet Walmart lovers to come out. New Yorkers will never understand the awesome magnitude of "slashing down prices", and ruining the small moms and pops shops that have been screwing the American people up the butt since 1776!
