Shin splints.
Way back in 2004 (which kind of feels like another life), when I first started getting myself in shape, I would get shin splints when I ran. But I found that if I ran through them, they'd go away.
Fast forward to yesterday, when I didn't bother to think about the fact that I got shin splints for the first time in a long time, just after switching to Nike+iPod shoes from my Asics Kayanos, and I figured "What the hell. I'll just run through them."
13.5 miles later, I was in quite a bit of pain.
This morning, I could barely walk.
So, I've ordered stability inserts for my sneakers, and if they don't work, I'll abandon the Nike+ system and go back to my Kayanos (at least until Nike releases a + version of the Kantara... and I'll be using my Kayanos from now until the inserts arrive. Either way, though...
Note to self: do NOT try and run through shin splints. Especially not over 13.5 miles. Unless you're running a marathon.
In that case, go for it.
Love to all. Even you, the ex-stylist saleslady at ABC in Chelsea whose jaded front didn't quite cover a disappointed interior.

That's what happens when you follow a cult (iPod) :P
that'll teach ya to run when you have an owie.
Hey - that is why I don't run nikes. I ran with them back when I was a new runner and I kept getting "shin splints" or so I thought. Then one day I painfully realized that it was stress fractures (3 in one shin) I had to take 3 months off. 4-5 months after that (still running in Nike) I got two stress fractures in my ankle. - ouch. They hurt and take forever to heal. Be careful with those shoes.
Aside from an overtraining injury I have been running injury free since I switched to Asics.

C - currently wearing asics speedstar and freaking loving them since they are like the old ds trainer 98 (best shoe ever made in my opinion).
I'm totally switching back to asics, CG. You're spot on.
See I knew you would come back - just like trying to switch from apple to a pc.
Hope you recover quick and that it is just a shin splint. Keep ice on it before and after runs - that helped me.
CG
- I got my injuries while training for a marathon. I think Nikes aren't good for long distances. (over 3 miles ha ha)
CG is totally spot on! When I trained for my first marathon, I was in Nikes and had horrible shin splints and IT band issues. I went to a real running shoe store and the guy told me to never run in Nikes again. He said that they didn't make a shoe stable enough for anyone that pronates even a little. I've run in Saucony Stabils ever since. Although, I've never been able to completely shake the IT band issues. Asics huh? hmm... maybe I'll jump on that bandwagon with you guys.
Take a week off to rest and ice and you'll be right back on track!
